Barthel Funeral Home was established in 1856 by community leader John Grieve, a local blacksmith and undertaker who manufactured coffins. The firm was originally known as John Grieve Funeral Home and, throughout the years, it was sold to numerous owners and underwent several name changes. In 1990, Robert Barthel, the owner at the time, sold the firm to his son John, and it was renamed Barthel Funeral Home.
The funeral home’s current building was built in 1938 by Harry and Mary Stager who lived in the upper apartment, as did the Barthel family years later. An addition was added in 1972 to accommodate a larger arrangement office, new foyer and a third visitation room. In 1984, a new showroom and storage area were added, and the lower level was converted into a lounge area and washroom facilities. In 1995, the Barthel family moved out of the apartment, allowing the space to be used for offices and a grief counseling room.
