About

With more than 160 years of caring service, Barthel Funeral Home has earned its reputation as a trusted provider of funeral, memorial, burial, cremation and cemetery services to the Cambridge community. Some even consider us a Preston gem. We consider every Cambridge resident a friend.

Our cozy funeral home

Lobby at Barthel Funeral HomeBarthel Funeral Home opened its current location at the corner of Queenston Road and Argyle Street in 1938. Naturally, we've undergone renovations and expansions throughout the years, and our warm, welcoming space—including cozy visitation rooms and contemporary lounge—reflects modern times.

Unique memorial services

The spectrum of services we offer has evolved as well. As a member of the Dignity Memorial® network of providers, we are committed to exceeding expectations by creating memorials as unique as the people we help celebrate. Regardless of the type of service you seek, our goal is to leave an indelible mark of a life well lived.

Perhaps you want a traditional funeral service at a church, graveside or elsewhere, followed by a catered reception. Or maybe it's a no-holds-barred celebration of life, complete with live music, catering and a roof-raising send-off that reflects the personality and passions of yourself or your loved one. Either way—or anywhere in between—we go the extra mile to make the occasion special. From bagpipes to cupcakes, puppies to putters, bird-shaped urns to blue marble monuments, we take the things that mattered to someone and string them together to create a singular, heartfelt memorial.

Here for you

Please contact us if you need help right away or would like more information about our services, including planning ahead for a funeral. We are always here for you.

History

Celebration Room at Barthel Funeral HomeCommunity leader John Grieve, a blacksmith and undertaker who manufactured coffins, established John Grieve Funeral Home in 1856. Through the years, the funeral home exchanged hands several times and saw several name changes. In 1990, owner Robert Barthel sold the firm to his son John, who renamed it Barthel Funeral Home.

The funeral home’s current location, at the corner of Queenston Road and Argyle Street, in Preston, was built in 1938 by Harry and Mary Stager. The couple lived in an upstairs apartment, as did the Barthel family years later.

Growing with Preston

As the business grew, so did Barthel Funeral Home itself. Space was added in 1972 to accommodate a larger arrangement office, new foyer and third visitation room. In 1984, a new showroom and storage area were added, and the funeral home's lower level was converted into a lounge and washroom facilities. In 1995, the Barthel family moved out of the upstairs apartment, and that space became offices and a place for grief counseling.

Just as the actual space evolved, so did our services. Today, as a member of the Dignity Memorial® network, Barthel Funeral Home gives you not only the warm, familiar attention you expect from a locally operated funeral home but also the value you deserve by way of the largest network of funeral, burial, cremation and cemetery service providers in North America.
